WoodenBoat Show 2007 activities
8/15/2006
While plenty of incredibly beautiful wooden boats will be docked at the WoodenBoat Show set to take place August 25 to 27 at the Newport Yachting Center, there will also be ample alternative activities to inspire attendees.
Watching amateurs build wooden boats should be entertaining. Up to twelve families and groups will build their own Peace Canoe on site during the run of the show. Their completed vessels, which they get to take home with them free of charge, will be launched into Newport Harbor at noon on Sunday. These familes and groups, from throughout New England and upstate New York, were invited to participate by writing a winning essay on why their family should be selected. Among the participants are a pair of Congregational Church ministers and their families, volunteers from the Blackstone Valley Paddle Club, several families with members from three generations, a retired policeman and his family, a single mother and her 12-year old son, members of Kids Klub Summer Camp, and two seventeen-year-old best friends.
The Peace Canoe design is by John C. Harris and Chesapeake Light Craft. Boulter Plywood is the lead sponsor and provided the wood. Collano, Inc. and Crabcote Marine Finishes by Crystallac are providing additional supplies. Two lucky show attendees will win completed Peace Canoes just by signing up for the chance. Entries will be accepted all weekend with the winner’s name being drawn on Sunday at noon. No purchase is necessary.
More than two-dozen informative demonstrations, workshops and presentations will be offered to show goers at no additional charge. Industry experts will offer daily demonstrations of various wooden boat-building skills throughout the weekend. Here’s the schedule:
Show exhibitors will also present workshops related to their products or services, the schedule for which follows:
Two noted maritime authors will offer book signings and slide presentations. On Friday, August 25 at 5:30, the editor of WoodenBoat magazine, Matthew Murphy will present selected photographs on the big screen from his brand new book, “Glass Plates and Wooden Boats: The Yachting Photography of Willard B. Jackson at Marblehead, 1898-1937.” All the photographs in the book were made from the original glass plates and represent the development of the pleasure sailboat in the four decades before World War II.
On Saturday, August 26 at 5:30, writer-sailor John Rousmaniere will present an illustrated talk and book signing for recently published work, “In a Class by Herself,” about one of America's finest wooden boats, the yawl “Bolero” Bolero is a prime example both of American yacht building at its best and of what Rousmaniere calls “the passion for craftsmanship.” He describes in detail how her brilliant, artistic creators came together to design and build her, how she was sailed, and then – after years of mistreatment – how her restorers brought about her recent resurrection against all the odds.
Several FREE interactive educational and fun maritime activities for children will be offered at CAPTAIN KIDS – Discovery Point. This very special exhibit is being brought to the show by Captain Kids, Inc, a national non profit educational organization. Onshore and onboard the sailing vessel SEAFLOWER, volunteers will offer The Theme of the 2006 Discovery Point Center is SPLASH In, On & Under the Water. All participants will receive a Free Membership in the Captain Kids Club and have a chance to go home with the most awesome tee shirt compliments of Interlux yacht paints.
Attendees can also learn about building or restoring wooden boats from such venerable institutions as the WoodenBoat School, the International Yacht Restoration School, the Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory, the Landing School and the Apprenticeshop.
Several small craft will be available to sail, row, paddle, or power on free trial runs. High performance and recreational kayaks and canoes plus rowboats, skiffs, dinghies and other assorted vessels will be available from such exhibitors as Chesapeake Light Craft, Pulsifer, and Six River Marine.
Show goers can support the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) by purchasing raffle tickets for a chance to win a cedar strip canoe custom built by Marty Wieszczecinski of the Whiskey River Boatshop. All (100%) of the proceeds will go to the charity. The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary health agency — a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans. The raffle winner’s name will be drawn on August 31.
Show visitors can learn about the lives of 19th Century fisherman by touring the 177-foot tall ship Gazela Primeiro. Built to carry fishermen to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Gazela would leave Lisbon every spring laden with as many as 35 dories stacked on deck like drinking cups, a crew of 40 men (35 fishermen/sailors, two cooks, two mates and the captain), and a couple of apprentices. Her cargo hold would be full of salt as ballast. Gazela now belongs to the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild. The organization is made up primarily of volunteers of all ages and walks of life who devote their time to maintaining and sailing the ship and teaching maritime skills to new members, interested school and community groups, and the general public.
On shore exhibits and displays will include a plethora of shopping opportunities. Classic Meissner Winches will be available from R&W Enterprises suppliers and consultants to both Pirates of the Caribbean movies. For these movies R&W supplied hundreds of wooden deadeyes, miles of rope for both the sets, and refits of the sailing ships Providence and Bounty. Anyone seeking original nautical paintings for their home or yacht should visit Linda Norton’s booth where she will be showing her new series, “From the Deck Of” that features lively action aboard wooden boats. J.P. Uranker, a woodcarver from Martha’s Vineyard produces authentic handmade maritime reproductions of sea chests and ditty boxes. His meticulous attention to detail assures the owner that considerable time and effort have gone into building the chest before the hand carving takes place. If a genuine Venetian water taxi is on your wish list, you’re in luck, as La Gondola is bringing a 30-foot long solid mahogany version built in Jacksonville, Florida from components made in Venice, Italy. If something smaller and less expensive suits your fancy, Sail Classics offers beautifully finished ship models of many famous sailing yachts. A complete line of nautical clocks, barometers and tide time clocks in solid brass and chrome will be exhibited by the Whale’s Tale.
A few lucky sailors will even get to spend a half-day sailing aboard the historic 12-Meter yachts Gleam or Northern Light during the show. Gleaming brass, polished mahogany, and all the comforts of the golden days of yachting will greet the lucky participants as they step aboard these gorgeous, fully-restored former "Cup class yachts." They will be allowed to take the helm and feel the thrilling response of these thoroughbred yachts while witnessing the beauty, power and majesty as another twelve pulls along side. This very special offer, available to a limited number of participants, is obtainable by advance reservation only.
Discounted admission tickets are available at www.TheWoodenBoatShow.com or by calling 1-800 273-7447. August 14 is the deadline for discounts.
