Island Style Custom Yachts to launch state-of-the-art sportfisherman in June
OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. (May XX, 2009) - Island Style Custom Yachts (ISCY), southern coastal North Carolina’s newest “big boat” builder, will launch its first vessel in June, in the company’s home of Ocean Isle, N.C. The ISCY Island Style Q42, Hull 1 is a fully custom, 42’ luxury sportfishing yacht.
“This boat will be among the best in the world in its class,” said Scott Quaintance, founder and owner of ISCY. “We’re talking about 68 to 70 feet of boat in a 42-foot express.”
The launch in June will precede the boat’s premier appearance at the Barta Boys and Girls Club Billfish Tournament, July 16-19 in Beaufort, N.C. The Q42 will be available for visits and tours at Beaufort Town Docks from 5 – 9 p.m. during the tournament as arranged by Boger-Berry Yacht Sales of Myrtle Beach.
ISCY is a full custom boat builder that hopes to have its next vessel underway this year. “We can build any size boat and add virtually any custom feature imaginable,” said Quaintance.
Acclaimed naval architects Donald L. Blount and Associates designed the hull for the Island Style Q42. Intended to work the shallows around Ocean Isle as well as the open water, the Q42 sports a moderate Carolina flare with a Palm Beach shear line.
“I wanted some of the Carolina flare, but I didn’t want it over-exaggerated,” said Quaintance. “Plus, instead of going with a steep, Carolina-style shear line, we went with more of a Florida style, where it rolls back to the cockpit. It’s a bit of both worlds, while maintaining the handling of a Carolina boat in big seas.”
The first Island Style Q42 is equipped with a complement of modern amenities and rigged with extras such as an Eskimo ice machine (that will pump chipped ice into the transom fish box and one deck box), insulated fish boxes, a unique tackle storage set-up, built-in tuna tubes, a 45-gallon live well and bait prep center. Additionally, both the helm and salon are air-conditioned.
The cold-molded epoxy and Okoume plywood hull is designed with prop pockets to reduce draft. This feature will allow easy maneuvering in the shallow inlets and waterways common to the southern North Carolina coast. Prop pockets also reduce the shaft angle from engines to propellers, improving performance and mileage, and keeping the transom up while backing down a fish. Powered by a pair of 865 hp CAT C15s, the vessel has a cruising speed of approximately 35 knots and a top speed of 42 knots, according to the designers.
The boat is built with traditional cold-molded construction techniques, and all decks and components utilize advanced, state-of-the-art composite materials. The Island Style Q42 also features Bass Products’ advanced E-Plex System. This digital, electrical distribution and monitoring system replaces large, heavy wiring bundles with small, light-weight data cables. The E-Plex system provides a weight savings of 800-1,000 pounds.
A few of the luxury features of the Q42 Hull 1 include a teak and holly interior, teak cockpit, coaming, covering board and toe rail, mezzanine seating, 6 ½’ of head room in the salon, 6’ of headroom in the engine compartment (bridge deck closed), a 7’ double-berth forward, full galley, and full head with separate fiberglass shower stall.
Southern coastal North Carolina provides the opportunity to fish for a wide range of species from as close as half a mile out to as far as 70 miles offshore. The region is not known as a big boat area, however. The canal systems and inlets can be restrictive to depths of three feet on low tides. With these conditions and fuel concerns in mind, ISCY developed a versatile new sportfishing boat with attitude and agility, able to handle open water and shallow passages with ease.
