Bay Ship & Yacht Completes Water Jet Refurbishment on Harbor Bay Maritime's Bay Breeze Ferry
Alameda, CA, May 5, 2008 – Harbor Bay Maritime’s Bay Breeze returned to service March 24th ferrying commuters weekdays between Harbor Bay Island/Alameda and San Francisco’s Ferry Building after a complete water jet refurbishment and routine preventative maintenance was conducted by Bay Ship & Yacht in Alameda, CA.
The Bay Breeze, a two-deck, 180 passenger catamaran ferry also available for charter, was taken out of service by the Ferry owners on July 20th after completing the first crossing of the morning. According to Harbor Bay Maritime, engine coolant destroyed the Bay Breeze’s o-rings and seals, causing coolant to leak into the exhaust manifold. Harbor Bay Maritime contracted with Bay Ship & Yacht to start work on February 13, 2008 to repair the seals and to service the ferry’s water jets as routine use had caused small holes in the metal cylinders, which in turn created noticeable vibrations.
Bay Ship & Yacht’s team of expert machinists and tradesmen conducted a total water jet refurbishment in consultation with water jet manufacturer, Rolls Royce, technical representatives. After inspecting and identifying the scope of the repair and preventive maintenance needed, BS&Y craftsmen completely removed, refurbished, reinstalled and realigned the water jets, shafting, bearings and engines.
All work was completed on-site at Bay Ship & Yacht’s Alameda waterfront location, utilizing many of Bay Ship & Yachts departments and services. Bay Ship & Yacht’s facilities include drydocking capabilities for large vessels up to 2800 Tons and 120 Meters (400 ft), a 1200 Ton and 61 Meter (200 ft) Syncrolift with berthing for multiple vessels ashore, a machine shop, fabrication shop, pipe shop, joinery shop, paint shop, propeller shop, and a full service naval architecture and marine engineering department.
