Alameda, CA, December 20, 2006
– Bay Ship & Yacht Co. today announced the hauling of Lindblad Expeditions’ M/V Sea Bird and M/V Sea Lion as the first commercial lift using their new Rolls-Royce Marine Syncrolift®. The M/V Sea Bird and the M/V Sea Lion are US registered, sister-ships measuring 152 feet in length and 99 gross tons. They can accommodate up to 70 guests in 37 outside cabins and cruise at 12 knots.

M/V Sea Bird & M/V Sea Lion“We have been using Bay Ship & Yacht as our service facility for years and to be the first customer to use the new lift seemed very appropriate,” said Andy Boyer, Port Engineer; Lindblad Expeditions. “The Syncrolift® and rail system operated very smoothly and we really appreciate the care and timeliness with which Bay Ship & Yacht executed our haulouts.”

As the boats arrived for their annual service, they were greeted by many onlookers as each vessel was moved into place to be lifted out of the water by the Syncrolift®. The M/V Sea Bird and M/V Sea Lion are owned and operated by Lindblad Expeditions of New York and their maintenance is scheduled annually as part of their trek from Alaska to Mexico for the Winter-Cruise season. The vessels will under go routine hull maintenance and propeller tuning.

“Working with Lindblad Expeditions and hauling the Sea Bird and Sea Lion has been exciting and afforded us the opportunity to celebrate the culmination of a seven year project bringing our dream to life,” said Bill Elliott, General Manager and President of Bay Ship & Yacht.

M/V Sea Bird & M/V Sea LionBay Ship & Yacht serves the commercial and superyacht markets with 1200 feet of shore side berths and one floating dry dock with a capacity of 2800-tons. With the addition of the Syncrolift® and rail system, Bay Ship & Yacht will have an additional hoisting capacity of 1200-tons and storage for up to seven 62 meter (200 ft) vessels.

“Putting the MV Sea Bird / Sea Lion on land has really illustrated our ability to complete a haulout in a more efficient manner,” said Alan Cameron, Shipyard Manager of Bay Ship & Yacht. “As we continue to utilize the Syncrolift® in our daily operations, we are seeing a reduction in the amount of time required to mobilize and support each job. This efficiency is really apparent in jobs where two or more boats needing the same type of work can be placed next to each other in the yard to share personnel and equipment.”

About Rolls-Royce Marine Syncrolift®

A Syncrolift® is simply a large elevator, which raises and lowers ships in and out of the water for dry-docking ashore. The patented articulated platform mechanically supports a ship in a manner similar to that provided by buoyancy when it is afloat. This minimizes peak loads on the hull plating. A transfer system then allows ships, or ship sections, to be quickly moved around the shipyard.
