15th Annual WoodenBoat Show to offer informative sessions
7/27/2006
More than two-dozen informative demonstrations, workshops and seminars will be offered to attendees of the 15th Annual WoodenBoat Show set to take place August 25 – 27 at the Newport Yachting Center in Newport, Rhode Island. No additional charge is required to take part in these sessions.
This year, for the first time, the show is providing an opportunity for show goers to learn directly from the boatbuilders. Individuals can try to take a long shaving from a plank, learn how to make their own wooden cleat, or how to work a steambox. At the Hands-On Workshops, scheduled from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day of the show, boatbuilder and teacher Aime' Fraser, WoodenBoat Associate Editor Tom Jackson, students from the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS), and a cast of drop-in boatbuilders will be on hand to put them to work.
In addition, industry experts will offer daily demonstrations of various other wooden boat-building skills throughout the weekend, such as Evaluating and Tuning Hand Planes by Harry Bryan and Steam Bending by Tom Hill on Friday. Subjects to be covered on Saturday include Epoxy-Plywood Construction by Geoff Kerr, Tool Sharpening by Aime Fraser, and Understanding Lofting presented by IYRS faculty and students. Peter Arenstam from Plimoth Plantation will reveal Early Rigging Styles on Friday in addition to Modern Rigging Materials and Techniques for Caulking Small Craft by other experts.
Show exhibitors will also present workshops related to their products or services On Friday at 11:30 a.m., Shaw and Tenney, makers of fine traditionally handcrafted wooden oars and paddles, will explain how to select the proper size oar or paddle to propel your watercraft. At 2 o’clock, representatives from FeatherBow will demonstrate the use of their innovative woodworking product, the FeatherBow feather board and Gerry’s Gadget, which takes the work out of removing rubber deck caulking. At 3 in the afternoon, Soren Eriksson will demonstrate infrared paint and varnish removal with the Silent Paint Remover and use of Linseed paint and varnish. All products are completely free of chemicals, solvents, and additives.
On Saturday morning at 11:30, the technical staff from the Crystalac Company will cover the many advantages of using Crabcoat Marine Finishes over conventional coatings. At 2 o’clock, Chesapeake Light Craft president and stitch-and-glue expert John C. Harris will demonstrate how to Fiberglass Wood Like A Pro and at 3 p.m., Soren Eriksson will again demonstrate infrared paint and varnish removal with the Silent Paint Remover and use of Linseed paint and varnish. All products are completely free of chemicals, solvents, and additives.
Sundays offerings include Making Sails work by Aaron Jasper of Jasper & Bailey Sailmakers at 11:30 a.m. and Understanding Insurance for Wooden Boats by Jim Cassidy of Heritage Marine Insurance at 2 o’clock.
The 15th Annual WoodenBoat Show will present traditional classics and contemporary wooden boats of every type. In addition to dozens of beautiful boats, this unique celebration of craftsmanship, ingenuity and beauty features products and services by 150 companies from across North America plus a full schedule of workshops and demonstrations by industry leaders. Families can enjoy free activities for children of all ages at Captain Kids Discover Point and all show visitors are welcome to board the three-masted Portuguese Barkentine Tall Ship Gazela Primeiro.
