| Maxum, an affiliate of U.S. Marine, which is itself a division of the Brunswick Corporation, was created in 1987 as an upmarket complement to the company’s Bayliner manufacturing operation. (Note that the Brunswick Corporation, headquartered in Lake Forest, Illinois, also owns Sea Ray Boats and Mercury Marine, among other holdings.) With the rapid expansion of the Bayliner fleet during the late 1980s, executives at U.S. Marine decided to form Maxum as a separate product line with a series of inexpensive runabouts and weekend cruisers. In many ways, Maxum has followed the successful marketing strategy of Bayliner by offering a high-style, entry-level product at prices well below those of other manufacturers. Beginning in 1988 with a 17-foot runabout, the Maxum fleet has grown steadily over the years and now includes an entire stable of models from 18 to 42 feet in length. Headquartered in Arlington, Washington, Maxum is now one of the largest manufacturers of fiberglass pleasure boats in the world. |
