Description

The Hinckley Company is best known for its series of classically styled, semi-custom sailing yachts. Beginning over 60 years ago, Henry Hinckley began building small boats at a yard in Southwest Harbor, Maine. By the end of the 1950s the Hinckley yard had become the largest producer of wooden sailing auxiliaries while building a national reputation for quality craftsmanship and construction. While Hinckley had built many powerboats over the years, the demand for sailboats was so strong that the company focused on this market exclusively until the early 1990s. In 1990 the Talaria 39 (which later became a 42-footer) was introduced, and by 1993 a decision to broaden the product line resulted in the introduction of the Hinckley 36 Picnic Boat, a classic Downeast style dayboat with waterjet propulsion. The Picnic Boat was such a huge success that several other builders soon introduced jet-powered boats of their own design. Today Hinckley fields an expanding series of waterjet-powered yachts from 29 to 55 feet in length. Hinckleys are generally regarded as among the finest American-built yachts ever produced.
