New Zealand Millenium CupThe concept was spawned by Lane Finley, Executive Director of MAREX and event organizer, "The highly successful inaugural event sailed in Auckland three years ago at the dawning of the new millennium, was a wonderful counterpoint to the Louis Vuitton Cup and the America's Cup," said Finley.

The event is scheduled to take place every two to three years in New Zealand and already, 2003 is looking to be stellar Millenium Cup event. Finley is confident that 2003's line up will be bigger than the billion dollar fleet of 55 vessels entered in 2000.
At least 16 super yachts that competed three years ago are back to do it again.

More than 60 superyachts, sailboats and motor yachts, from all over the globe are registered in what has been described as the "most fun sailing event anywhere". New Zealand Millenium Cup
The inaugural event was staged in Auckland just prior to the 2000 America's Cup as a token of appreciation to superyachts for visiting New Zealand.

New Zealand Millenium CupWhile taken quite seriously by the boys with big toys, the event also includes it's fair share of parties including the event highlight, the passage race from Auckland to Kawau Island, followed by a spectacular gala dinner for up to 500 people at Mansion House located on the island. The race to Kawau will feature four division starts in Auckland's inner harbour off Devonport Wharf.

Needless to say, close racing is expected to be the order of the event.
