Deckhouse / Wheelhouse

SEA ANGEL's large, covered deckhouse has isinglass curtains on three sides, a fixed windshield forward and an opening overhead hatch which makes this an ideal area for relaxing, eating, and navigating in any sort of weather. Across the aft end there is wrap-around seating with two varnished tables (additional varnished custom table top stored under the chart drawers can be fitted easily to provide comfortable dining for up to 8 people).  To port and starboard on the outboard sides of the wheelhouse are doors which lead to the sidedecks.  The helm station, forward, has a built-in chart table with six drawers (port side), full electronics with wheel steering and a helmsman's chair on the centerline.  To starboard of the helm is the companionway to the main salon below.  Adjacent and starboard of the companionway is a built-in teak cabinet with Scotsman icemaker and Compact refrigerator.  Overhead in the deckhouse are two stainless steel grab rails, (4) Cybernet speakers and (6) Halogen lights.

Salon

Steps lead from the forward starboard side of the deckhouse to the bright and spacious salon below.

There are three large windows to port and starboard, three ports across the forward section of the house and two opening overhead hatches which give this area a great deal of light (and fresh air if so desired).  The salon is finished in teak paneling with high gloss teak moldings and trim. Across the forward end is a custom built wet bar and storage cabinet for glasses, and table linens.  The wet bar has a gold plated sink and faucet.  Adjacent to this is an entertainment center which can be hidden from sight by a teak, louvered roll down cover.  The entertainment center has a new 25" Toshiba flat screen TV with VHS and DVD, a Sony CD changer, CD controller and Alpine CD Shuttle, as well as storage for CD's and videos.  On the port side of the salon is a built-in, "L" shaped settee with tan cushions and upholstery (separate set of covers for settee cushions when yacht is in yard mode).  There is a varnished hi-lo table here that can be enlarged to accommodate up to eight for dining.  The sole is varnished teak and holly.  There is a teak grab rail overhead.

On the forward starboard side of the salon are two teak cabinets with sliding louvered doors.  The forward one is used for china storage, the aft for ship's manuals and files.  At the aft starboard corner is a small writing desk/office which can be used as a computer station.

Owner and Guest Accommodations

A four-step companionway leads from the centerline aft to the guest and owners' accommodations below.  Here the yacht is finished in an off-white linen textured wallcovering.  Moldings and door frames are varnished teak, and all hardware is brass.  Doors have painted white louvers which are framed with teak moldings.

Starting aft, along the companionway to port and starboard, are identical twin berth staterooms.  Both have a handsome, built-in teak bureau, with marble inlaid top, between the berths and a large mirror, teak drawers beneath the berths, and a cedar lined hanging locker (also fitted with louvered doors to allow air to circulate).  Door handles and other hardware here are beautiful solid brass.  At the aft end of both staterooms are ensuite heads with showers.  Each head has a Corian sink and Corian counter top, gold plated Sheryl Wagner fixtures, Vacuflush toilet, and teak and holly sole.  Carpeting here and throughout the guest and owners accommodations is very high quality, white wool.

All the way aft is the extremely comfortable and spacious master stateroom.  It has a queen centerline berth with large drawers underneath, two cedar lined hanging lockers to port and starboard with louvered door panels, a wrap-around vanity with chair to starboard and matching wrap-around desk with chair to port.  The desk has computer hook-ups, an ICOM M710 SSB and Panasonic wireless phone.  Above the desk to port is a teak cabinet with louvered roll away top which houses a Panasonic TV, a Sony DVD/VCR and a Sony CD player.  Adjacent is a louvered cabinet that can be locked which extends to the overhead and has shelves for storage.  Aft of the desk to port and the vanity to starboard are built-in bureaus each with 4 drawers.  At the very aft end of the master stateroom are ensuite his and her heads with a shared tub/shower in between them.  Both heads have Corian sinks and counter tops, teak storage cabinets, mirrors, cupboards with louvered doors for linens and handsome, gold plated Sheryl Wagner fixtures.  There are two large opening overhead hatches here as well as two opening ports on each side.  Adjacent to the port hatch is a foldaway ladder which can be used as an emergency escape egress.

Forward Accommodations

A curved stairway leads from the forward starboard corner of the main salon to the galley, engine room and crew's quarters below.

The engine room is accessed via a door from the aft end of the lower companionway.  Located under the main salon, it is extremely spacious for a sailboat of this size and has approximately 5'5" headroom.  The main engine is mounted on the centerline.  There is a 36 kW Northern Lights generator outboard to starboard and a new 20 kW Kilopak outboard to port.  At the forward end of the engine room is the main electrical panel (see Engine and Electrical for inventory of equipment).

Forward of the engine room entrance and to port is the large, well ventilated galley.  On the outboard side are deep double stainless steel sinks.  Along the aft bulkhead and below the counter are a holding plate refrigerator with two front loading doors and a freezer (also front loading).  The counter is finished in white Corian and has a fiddle which makes it an excellent working space whether at anchor or at sea.  Above the counter are large cabinets for storage.  Opposite, mounted on the forward bulkhead of the galley, is a new Viking 4-burner stove with oven.  Above it is a microwave.  Adjacent to the stove is a small portable dishwasher on top of a storage cabinet with drawers underneath.  Over the stove there is a large opening hatch and over the sink is an opening port.

Opposite the galley to starboard is an upper and lower berth stateroom with drawers under the lower berth and a hanging locker.  There is an opening overhead hatch here as well as an opening port.  This stateroom and all of the crew quarters are finished in oak.

Immediately forward of the galley on the port side of the companionway are a Bosch washer and dryer.  Adjacent is a crew ladder which leads up to the foredeck.  Opposite is a crew dinette with file drawers under the seats.

Further along the companionway to port is the second upper and lower berth cabin with a hanging locker, built-in drawers and drawers under the lower berth.  This stateroom has 2 deck prisms as well as an opening port.

Just forward to starboard is the crew head with sink and shower.  The shower is shared with a second head which is located immediately forward and is ensuite to the captain's cabin.

The captain's cabin is forward and to port and has upper and lower berths with storage underneath the lower berth, two cabinets, a hanging locker, small overhead opening hatch and an opening port.  All cabin doors and cabinet doors in the crews' quarters are louvered and there is excellent headroom throughout.

Frame 1 is the furthest frame forward in the bow and 57 is the furthest frame aft in the lazarette. The framing spacings vary from 16-1/4" to 18 1/2" on centerline. The floor frames are 3/8" plate with a 2" flange in the way of the mast step and high load areas. Other floor frames are 5/16" plate. The tank tops are 1/4" plate.

Her keel plating and garboard plate are 1/2" plate. The next plate up is 3/8" and then the topsides are 5/16".

Remarks

During her lifetime this classic Sparkman & Stephens motorsailer has cruised extensively throughout the Caribbean, the Med, the East and West coasts of the U.S. and as far West as the Galapagos Islands.  Her easy to handle ketch rig with centerboard configuration, in combination with her excellent liveaboard characteristics, large covered deckhouse, raised salon, spacious engine room, and lovely owner and guest accommodations make her an exceptionally comfortable, safe and versatile bluewater cruiser.  Having completed an extensive 3 month maintenance program in the summer of 2008, having had her decks refurbished in the winter of 2008 and 2009, and having been hauled out for new bottom paint, through hulls and zincs in April of 2009, she is ready to embark on another passage.
