Recent Work

Last winter (finished June 2006) we did a long and intensive shipyard period in West Palm Beach..

It started with pulling the mast and boom for inspection and service and grew from there.  All the rods and end fittings were taken apart.. the mast stripped of all hardware, fixtures and electronics for paint and refurbishment…..no major defects were found in the rigging but in the interest of having a sound rig and full confidence for another 6 years  in the end we replaced all the shrouds and stays with new or reheaded and replaced the end fittings..  At the same time the mast and boom and pole were primed and topcoated with awlgrip and the hydraulic rams and running gear serviced or replaced.  And similarly all the sails were sent away to the north loft where they were reconditioned with new webbing in the corners and new suncover on all the headsails..

While the rig was out of the boat we took the opportunity for an extended haulout and do more time consuming jobs such as renewing the paintwork on the deckhouse,  caprails, and waterways next to the teak decks.  Tom Corness was consulted for recommendations and following his advice we removed and reconditioned the propeller shaft and propeller and stern thruster..  Bowthruster and rudder were given close review and normal service.  The old bottom paint was sanded off and one coat of barrier and two coats of Petite Pro applied to the bottom of the vessel.  On the interior all soft furnishings and fabrics were cleaned with some carpets replaced.  Misc cosmetics around switch panels and mirrors etc were serviced or replaced.

The aftcockpit which had been used extensively for diving had the seat covers replaced with teak and similarly the stern boarding steps and passarel were upgraded.

Many engineering projects were undertaken most noteworthy perhaps was the addition of florescent lighting in the engine room and freshening up of the paint… The mainengine and big generator were both given checkups and found to be sound.. even compression across the board and all the injectors and injection pumps were removed, serviced and replaced.  The domestic waterpump was replaced with a new more efficient  variable flow type.  Pumps and tanks were serviced and inspected.  Sections of thermal and acoustic insulation throughout the engineroom and salon were replaced.  The gyrocompass was serviced (new sphere installed in 2005).  Plasma screen serviced. Fleet 77 checkup including updating of software.  Hatchlenses replaced on 3 of the hatches and two portholes.  Seachests and valves cleaned and  lubricated (many ball valves replaced in 2005)

The yard period was very good for Sorcerer and she came out of it fresh and renewed, ready for more traveling and adventures.

Remarks

SORCERER II recently completed a 2 year scientific expedition circumnavigating the globe in mid latitudes collecting samples of microbes in seawater for genetic sequencing and cataloguing.

SORCERER II was conceived by an experienced yachtsman who wanted not just a world cruising yacht, but one that would be capable of handling the extremes in latitudes, from equatorial heat and humidity to latitudes between 60 and 70 degrees.

SORCERER II's construction is light for performance, but very strong, with her kevlar and E glass laiminates, epoxy bonding and carefully chosen core materials. SORCERER II can accelerate in a puff like a race boat, yet set  anchors to hold her position in a small cove after maneuvering via bow and stern thrusters into a tight, yet safe, position.

SORCERER II's acoustical engineering ensures a quiet ride and no background noise from her machinery, as owner and guests cruise in safety and infinite comfort afforded by all of her beautifully engineered systems on board.

Easily attaining 10 - 11 knots on passages ensures 240 - 260 mile days, with more, when conditions are favorable.

SORCERER II's cockpit provides easy access to and from tenders or for diving and water sports.
