Accomodation

This Class 40 is built to the limits of the Class 40 box rule. She remains to be measured in. From the collision bulkhead forward to the watertight bulkhead aft GWAIHIR has what can loosely be described as an open layout with four berths, a head, a galley and a centerline navigation station. Space for two of the permanent berths are located aft under the cockpit, port and starboard and the other two are under the house in the salon, port and starboard. The water ballast tanks are located outboard of the settee berths in the salon and the quarter berths aft. The Nav Station is located between the settes, forward under the house. It features a comfortable forward facing seat with cushions and a generous sized chart table, with the electronics panel above. The galley unit and sink is directly aft of the seat at the foot of the companionway as you go below. The engine is located under the companionway steps leading below. Although boxed by the companionway steps it is open aft for easy access. There is full standing headroom under the house and a number of small opening ports (7) as well as a opening hatch in the forward storage area, to allow ventilation below. The main structural bulkhead is at the forward end of the salon. It has two openings forward, one each, port and starboard. The toilet is located forward of the bulkhead on the centerline, just in front of the mast. The under deck area forward is completely devoted to sail and other storage.

Cockpit & Deck

The deck and cockpit have been optimized for single/double handed racing. It is possible to stand on the centerline at the companionway and reach all halyard and sail controls which are lead back to two winches at the aft end of the cabin top. In addition, the house has been extended aft by 24" to form a hard dodger. The space underneath this dodger has angled, ergonomically correct seats where the on deck crew can sit out of the worst of the weather, but still very much on watch and in charge of making sure GWAIHIR is making her best possible speed. Other notable features on deck include a floating jib lead adjustment system which allows you to put the clew anywhere you want and eliminates the neccessity and weight of permanent tracks. The carbon fiber sprit has been designed so that it can be swung aft by pulling one of the pins, port or starboard, securing it at the stem. It swings back at deck level making it safer and easier to work on should a problem develop. There are three winches on deck on each side of the cockpit for handling the runners, jibs and spinnakers. The main traveller is aft and pretty much runs the full width of the boat just in front of the transom. The mast and boom were custom carbon fabrications from Hall Spars in Rhode Island.

Hull

GWAIHIR was built by Al Fresco Composites, a company comprised of builders Stewart Wiley and Ted Brown, who have combined to build a number of superb world class racing sailboats. The hull and deck are composed of custom S Glass weaves in a laminate with epoxy resin which is 30% stronger in tensile and 10% stronger in compressive strength than E Glass, allowing for less laminate weight required to meet ABS standards. The entire structure was heat cured and denser cores were employed in high stress areas, like the bottom forward of the keel. ABS structural standards for panel strength were employed throughout.  Although the displacement is listed as 9923, the class 40 minimum weight, we beleive GWAIHIR to be 300 - 400 lbs heavier.
