| Topaz was founded in 1974 by Pat Patterson following the successful introduction of his 28-foot center console design at the previous years Annapolis Boat Show. Specializing in saltwater fishing boats for the East Coast market, by 1980 the small Owning, MD, plant was building two inboard models for their dealers—the Topaz 24 and the Topaz 28. In 1981 the line grew to include a 36-foot model, and by the end of the decade the Topaz fleet featured eight different sportfishing models from 29 to 44 feet in length. In 1988 Topaz introduced the very successful Topaz 39 Royale and two years later followed up with an equally good-looking 32 Royale. Always a small limited-production builder (the company built about 500 boats over the years), the economic recession of the early 1990s caused serious problems for Topaz and production at the Swansboro, NC, facility was concluded in 1991. OMC (Outboard Marine Corp.) purchased the assets a few months later but never reintroduced the Topaz line. Still popular on the used markets, Topaz models continue to be well regarded for their simple and practical design and good-running hulls. Topaz is back in business today with production facilities in Egg Harbor, NJ. |
