Southern Cross was established in 1984 by Australian businessman/sportsman Mike Gore whose idea it was to build a series of Fexas-designed high-performance convertible sportfishing boats for export into the U.S. market. After a brash marketing campaign in which Southern Cross announced its intention to “blow Hatteras and Bertram out of the water,” the first Southern Cross model, a 52-foot Fexas-designed convertible, made its U.S. debut at the 1985 Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show to decidedly mixed reviews. The Southern Cross 53 Cockpit Motor Yacht quickly followed, and by 1987 a new Fexas-designed 44-foot convertible joined the fleet. As the U.S. economy began its slide into eventual recession during the late 1980s, the Australian economy was in even worse shape, and by the early 1990s whatever parity existed between the two country’s currencies evaporated in favor of the U.S. dollar.. Southern Cross ended their marketing efforts in this country at that time, and by 1993 the company was in receivership.

Early in 1998 the heart and soul of the Southern Cross brand name was bought back to life. The objective was to find the best boat builders in the world to build the quality boats that would suit a global market. Further, these vessels had to withstand the most perilous of seas around the globe with the minimum amount of maintenance to ensure pleasurable use. The first factory of choice was the company that introduced fiberglass boat building in Australia in 1959 and for many years thereafter built boats under license for one of the best known boat builders in Miami. Southern Cross has kept traditional styling and floor plans that are practicable and carefully kept the brilliant performance of the original boats intact. Southern Cross has developed an impressive range of solidly built, highly sought after production yachts with world class navel architects and designers for its custom built boats.
