The Columbia Custom 30 Sprint

Over the past year, the Columbia 30 Sprint has proven itself to be a capable distance racer. Owners have excelled in offshore and coastal races, some in excess of 300 nautical miles. The boats have demonstrated their strength, durability and performance in wild ocean conditions and true wind speeds of 40 knots. The Columbia 30 Sprint is a true pocket ocean racer. While many owners enjoy offshore distance racing, most sailing is done one afternoon at a time and the Columbia 30 has also meet those challenges.

That being said, you can’t compare Kamikaze to any other Columbia 30 on the water. Kamikaze was built and modified with nothing else in mind but going fast. There is very little on her that is stock for all hardware, running rigging, and standing rigging has been upgraded to the next level of performance and reliability. Along with all the modifications listed below are the use of a (20/21) mast head rig (more sail area) and the use of twin rudders. This may sound crazy but with twin rudders the owners have found they really add stability to the boat both upwind and downwind and prevents round ups. The custom carbon fiber rudders are fitted with custom carbon fiber cassettes making the depth of the rudders adjustable to all wind conditions for less drag.

I have skippered this boat several times myself to see just what this boat is all about for buoy, point to point, and beer cans races in all types of breeze. This is a high energy, high speed boat for those of you who feel the need for speed. 2009 Kamikaze was doing a regatta in Long Beach, California on a windy day. While trading gybes on one of the races with a 50 footer, they were very curious at the end of the day to see just what their top boat speed was. After looking at their GPS (This is no fish story) their maximum speed for the day was 22 knots. This boat will start to surf at 7-8 knots and is very stable for the length and weigh she carries.
