| Tiara traces its roots back to 1955 when Leon Slikkers left his job at the Chris Craft plant in Holland, MI, and began the Slickcraft Boat Co. Starting with a small wooden runabout, by 1961 Slikkers had switched to fiberglass construction. In 1964 he introduced the SS235, a trailerable cuddy that turned out to be Slickcraft’s most popular model. The company was sold to the AMF Corp. in 1969, and Slikkers stayed on as president until 1973 when he resigned. The following year he founded S2 Yachts and began building a line of cruising and racing sailboats. The Pursuit series of fishing boats followed in 1977, and in 1979 the first Tiara models, the 3100 Series, came out. AMF produced the last Slickcraft in 1980, and three years later Slikkers repurchased the brand name and resumed production of an all-new Slickcraft line. The 1980s was an era of steady growth for S2 Yachts which then boasted a product line that included Tiara Yachts, Pursuit Fishing Boats, Slickcraft Sportboats, and S2 Sailboats. (The sailboats were discontinued in 1987.) Still built in Holland, Tiaras are universally regarded as some of the highest-quality boats of their type in the industry. |
