The Silverton story has its roots in depression-era New York City when Henry Luhrs began a boat-building company that eventually became known as Henry Luhrs Sea Skiffs. By the time he and his two sons sold out to Banger Punta in 1965, the rapidly growing firm was building over 1,000 boats a year—a large operation by the standards of the day. Looking for other opportunities, in 1969 Luhrs’s s sons John and Warren purchased a small builder in Toms River, New Jersey, called Silverton Sea Skiffs. Renamed Silverton Marine, the operation grew steadily in size during the 1970s, and in 1978 the company introduced the Silverton 34 Convertible, its all-time best-selling model. By 1980 the Luhrs brothers had started two new companies, Mainship Yachts and Hunter Marine, now one of America’s leading sailboat manufacturers. In 1981 John and Warren purchased the Luhrs name back from Bangor Punta and introduced a new series of Luhrs fishing boats. Production was shifted to Millville, New Jersey, in 1985. Silverton products have earned an enviable reputation over the years for their affordable price, contemporary styling, and strong customer satisfaction. Its boats are distributed nationwide and in some 20 countries worldwide.
