Four Winns’ origins date back to 1962 when the company, then called the Safe-T-Mate Boat Co., manufactured a series of small fiberglass runabouts at its facility in Cadillac, Michigan. In 1975 the Winn family (father Bill and his three sons) purchased Safe-T-Mate and resumed production under the Four Winns nameplate. The popularity of Four Winns boats grew steadily in the following years, and the company’s model line soon included a full line of runabouts, deckboats, and family cruisers. By the mid-1980s, Four Winns had become one of the largest builders of fiberglass boats in the country. In December of 1986 the company was purchased by the Outboard Marine Corp. (OMC), builder of Johnson and Evinrude outboards and OMC sterndrives. The company experienced some rocky times in recent years as boat sales fell and employees were laid off; however, by 1998 the company had clearly regained its momentum, and by the following year Four Winns had increased production to earlier levels. In December of 2000, however, OMC declared bankruptcy and operations at Four Winns were briefly interrupted until March, 2001, when the company was purchased by Genmar. Today Four Winns has resumed its position in the marine marketplace as one of the country’s leading builders of deckboats, runabouts, sportboats, and family cruisers.
