One of America’s most successful manufacturers of family cruisers and motoryachts, Carver entered the boatbuilding business in the late 1950s with a line of small wood runabouts. By the mid 1970s the company was well into fiberglass construction with a full line of inboard and sterndrive boats marketed primarily in the growing Great Lakes market. By the 1980s Carver had grown to be a major builder of affordable family cruisers, sportboats, and motoryachts with a nationwide network of dealers. The company was purchased by industry-giant Genmar Corporation—which also owns Four Winns, Glastron, and Wellcraft, among others—in 1991. By the end of the 1990s Carver was building ever larger and more sophisticated yachts, the most notable of which was a very successful 53-foot pilothouse design introduced in 1998. Despite some difficult financial times in the early 1990s due to the ill-fated 10 percent luxury tax, Carver has thrived in recent years and is today recognized as a leader in the manufacturer of affordably priced motoryachts and family cruisers.
