Benetti is one of the oldest mega yacht builders in the world. Founded by Lorenzo Benetti in 1873, the shipyard started building wooden commercial sailing vessels for local and international trade.

After Lorenzo’s death the shipyard was directed by his two sons Gino and Emilio who renamed the shipyard Fratelli Benetti and gained recognition beyond the confines of the Mediterranean.
The yard became famous for its traditional Barcobestia trading vessels at least one of which is still afloat today as a private sailing yacht!

With the demise of wooden commercial sailing ships after the Second World War, Benetti turned to steel and the more lucrative leisure market and began building luxury mega yachts in the early 60's.

By the 1980's the range had extended to include much larger luxury motoryachts from 30 metres up to 60 metres, the culmination of which came with the launching of Nabila at 86 metres in 1980.

In 1985 a new page in the Benetti history book was turned with the acquisition of the yard by the renowned GRP luxury motoryacht builder Azimut Spa of Turin. This ushered in an era of new management and capital reinvestment resulting in the modern and technologically advanced Benetti yard as we know it today: a modern successful thriving shipyard well placed to meet the challenges of the future and offer their clients the finest yachts today, something we feel Lorenzo would still be proud of.

In 2004 Benetti made a strategic alliance with Fincantieri, the leading company in merchant and naval vessels, for building and marketing mega yachts of over 70 metres.

The Azimut-Benetti group has been the world’s leading shipyard in terms of production for the last six years. In its three shipyards in Italy, based in Viareggio, Fano and Livorno, Benetti build fully customized steel and aluminium motoryachts.

Today the combination of the skill and experience of a traditional shipyard blended with innovation and state-of-the-art technology makes Benetti the world's leading custom luxury yacht builder.

The success of Benetti is certainly due to the mix of Italian traditional building and experience with a modern, dynamic, state-of-the art yacht construction approach.

It now belongs to Azimut - Benetti SpA and is the largest yacht builder of 80'+ yachts in the world.
