Bigger boats - bigger marinas?
The yachts get bigger and bigger and the marinas simply run out of ‘parking space’. The only way to accommodate mega yachts is to build ‘megamarinas’. Thus happy mega yacht owners will find a place for their treasured possessions and local economies will get huge profits. Sure there will be some side-effects: in the end smaller boat owners will have to find another marinas for themselves and mega yacths trend is quite harmful for the environment. But still mega yachts are extermely popular especially among billionaires.
Thus in 1993 there were fewer than 700 private owners with boats over 78’ and currently there are an estimated 7000 yachts over 78’ in use. It looks as if people wanted to reduce their lives to the space of a yacht which should have everything from a swimming pool to a cinema hall so that their owners could at the same have everything they want and enjoy complete undisturbed privacy.
Most marinas have only few slips for mega yachts. And since the boating is seasonal – which means that depending on the season mega yachts can be docked either in the Carribean or in the Mediterranian – several mega yachts are constantly fighting for the same marina slip. If the mega yacht owners weren’t VIPs they would definitely drop an anchor somewhere at sea and get a dinghy to reach the shore. But for sure that’s not possible and they don’t condescend to it.
Currently many megamarinas are being built and many marinas are being rebuilt in order to accommodate these behemoth monsters along with luxury condominiums, five-star hotels, fashionable restaurants and shops so that the ‘megaowners’ not get bored. They should not only attract the mega yacht owners but also give people a chance to enjoy watching mega yachts because once you see a colossal cruiser you can’t but admire it’s magnificence and splendor.
A mega yacht can be compared with any five-star hotel in terms of luxury, but the lucrative mega yacht market has its problems too. One has to wait quite long before he gets his mega yacht. If you order it today be sure that the construction won’t begin before 2011 or 2012. It seems there’s not only shortage of megamarinas but also of construction sites. Sometimes a megayaht is resold several times before being finished as when the customer orders it he doesn’t have a clear idea of what he really wants.
So would you buy yourself a mega yacht – because we have some here, at YachtCouncil – and if you wouldn’t then why? Speak out.
